Kids’ questions for and about God can lead to great talk, deep talk, entertaining talk.  Of course, such talk with kids can also be pretty annoying, especially when we realize we don’t have all the answers.  On our special “Kids Ask God!” episode, my highly educated guests and I were stumped over and over by the musings of mites.   Rather than dismiss their questions as naïve, we need to pay close attention.  Why?

Remember the story in the Bible when the disciples were irritated by little kids hanging around their great teacher?  I can imagine the scene…a kid squirming on Jesus’ lap, looking for affection.  Another one grabbing his belt and pulling.  A dirty faced, grinning one, poking him in a ticklish spot - so Jesus can’t stop giggling, distracting the adults sitting at his feet contemplating the serious stuff.  And the questions! “Hey! Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesus? Was that lady really blind before?  What’s a mess-iah?  Do you like crickets?”  Insolent brats!  The disciples tried to shoo them away and Jesus said…  “Let the little children come!”  And even more perplexing, Jesus also said we needed to become like those children.  Talk about a tough teaching!

I think at least a part of that “becoming like children” instruction has to be a willingness to wonder, to ask our honest questions of God, and to really look for authentic answers.
